Wine Shippers (London) LTD

I got a reply from Toby Eales who kindly emailed me a PDF of the court case between Wine Shippers (London) LTD and Bath House Syndicate (1960). Essentially the Bath House Syndicate were the landlords for one of Wine Shipper's shops at 83 Piccadilly and didn't wish to extend their lease so they could redevelop the property. Looks like Bath House initially won, but then lost on appeal at a later hearing.

Ellis of Richmond, Sala Baganza

Ellis of Richmond, John Cortesi and Sala Baganza
I got a call from Ellis of Richmond (Company No: 00384864) regarding my query of last week about whether they bought a company called "Wine Shippers (London) LTD". The woman had spoken to the director and he didn't have any recollection of that, and definitely not having had a shop on the Clapham Road. Which means the final try is the other company mentioned by Companies House; "Whitbread Directors 1 LTD".

Searching Google for: "John Cortesi" Bern

brought up the following snippet: "The website of the US embassy in Bern carries a series of questions about the ... in England to try and track down the death certificate for John Cortesi, ..."

But the page is no longer available so I can't see the rest. I wonder what it said?

I e-mailed what I belive is a local church in Sala Baganza to ask whether any Cortesis were buried locally.

Boyd's Register

I was very pleased to get an e-mail from the Draper's guild with a copy of "Boyd's register" which lists various Whitbys that were members of the Draper's Guild. I shall go through it at the weekend.

Draper's Guild, Red Lion Wharf

I read that there's a list called the "Roll of the Draper's company of London". Presumably Mundee Whitby would be listed on it. I can't seem to see where i'd get a copy from though.

I e-mailed Ms. P Fussell at the Draper's Guild to ask whether they had any information on Mundee Whitby (1792-1845) who i'm pretty sure was a member of the Draper's Guild.

Looked through a "red box" at EH and was very pleased to have found an aerial photo which includes Red Lion Wharf.

Whitby Wharf, Samuel James Whitby

I found a listing for a Whitby Wharf which is close to Red Lion Wharf. I wonder it it's just a co-incidence?

"South out of Upper Thames Street at No.79, east of Three Crane Stairs (Lockie, 1810 and 1816).

Not named in the maps."

In response to a query as to what some notation meant, I now know that 12 means that Samuel James Whitby lived on Mount Street, Diss, Norfolk.

I called Barbara Ann Saunders (nee Whitby) to ask about Arthur Samuel Collins Whitby as i'm still trying to work out whether he may still be alive. Apparently he used to run a hotel in Richmond (possibly Kew) on the river Thames.

Mary Whitby

I got a very detailed reply from Peter Reed of Ewell History who, in addition to other interesting stuff, sent me the details of what is written on Mary Whitby's grave.

The Earthly Remains of
Mary
The Beloved Wife
of Thomas Whitby Esqr
Deputy of Vintry
Died February 1820
aged 37
also
Thomas John Whtby
Son of the above
Died Dec 1826 aged 26

I also got a reply from Kerry Whitby who asked if I was related to Louise. Odd. How could she know? Presumably she's thinking of a different Louise. I look forward to finding out.

Graveyards

I was reading the Whitby family book of old wills and in the front page if mentions a Mary Whitby who died in 1820. The only Mary Whitby currently in tree is Mary Whitby (nee Toombs) but it can't be her as she died after 1883. It says that Mary Whitby (d.aft.1820) was buried in Ewell Churchyard, Surrey. I called them up and they've kindly said they'll post some details.
